TENNESSEE SUITE
PROVINCETOWN THEATRE FESTIVAL (MA. USA)
The EUROPEAN PREMIERE of 'TENNESSEE SUITE' begins with 'THE TRAVELLING COMPANION' - a late self-portrait by Tennessee Williams, set in a New York City hotel, it depicts a standoff between an aging writer, much like Williams, and a young man who the writer picked up at a San Francisco gay bar and hired as a travelling companion. Unfortunately, this snappish youth insists that he is straight and refuses to sleep in the same bed as his benefactor. Filled with stammers and incomplete sentences .....will this piece of trade turn dirt?? The second short story 'THE CHALKY WHITE SUBSTANCE' follows: William's science fiction fantasia of trust and betrayal. Performers Lawrence and Clause, both hooded now, scheme for survival in a landscape devastated by nuclear war. "These two-handers, both written around 1980 and both concerning the power strugles between men, resonate with themes that dog Williams' body of work: brutality, old age, homosexuality, vulnerability, appearance versus reality". This lyrical, erotic and visually stunning production 'Tennessee Suite' in Dublin for the very first time, is from America's critically acclaimed Provincetown Tennessee Williams Theatre Festival, who examine and celebrate the work, life and evolving historical importance of Tennessee Williams.
